We flew from Beijing to Chengdu near the middle of China. The next day we visited the Panda Research Center. There are less than 2000 giant pandas left in the world. This center has been very successful in breeding giant pandas. The center is funded by loaning pandas to zoos around the world (for up to $1M a year fee).
The area is a lovely bamboo forest with beautiful gardens. I think it was the cleanest air we had breathed in the week we were in China. The animals have large enclosures and are very well cared for. Pandas eat for up to 16 hours a day, then fall into a bamboo coma. They are active for a couple hours but mostly it's about the bamboo.
The large screen at the main gate shows clips of the pandas and the movie, KungFu Panda (a very popular movie in China).
We also saw red pandas which look like large racoons.
We meant our cuteness quota this day. =)
